What are possums related to?

Possums, specifically those found in Australia and surrounding areas, are marsupials and are most closely related to other marsupials like kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. They belong to the order Diprotodontia. However, the opossums found in the Americas (often confused with possums) are part of a different order called Didelphimorphia. Both groups are marsupials, meaning they carry and nurse their young in pouches.
